Joe Altmann is a Los Angeles based photographer known for his raw, immersive approach to documenting people and subcultures around the world.
His work spans concert photography, portraiture, and street photography capturing punk and hardcore scenes, as well as gangs, artists, and everyday individuals encountered through his travels. Whether inside the pit or on the streets of places like India, Vietnam, Philippines, Cuba and Mexico, Altmann works from within, photographing moments as they happen, not from a distance, but as a participant.
His images are defined by proximity, presence, and trust. He immerses himself in each environment, spending time with his subjects and building real connections. Rooted in an almost anthropological approach, his process is based on observation, participation, and lived experience rather than surface-level documentation.
There is no hierarchy in his work. The same intensity found in a crowded pit exists in a quiet portrait. A musician, a crew, or a stranger on the street. Each is approached with equal attention and respect.
Altmann’s photographs capture something immediate and unfiltered: people as they are, fully present, carrying their identity, energy, and story in every frame.
